By Air
Åre/Östersund Airport (OSD)
Åre/Östersund Airport (OSD) is closest to Östersund (14 km) and is operated by two carriers, SAS and BRA. Transfer to and from OSD airport by bus takes only 15-20 minutes to most locations in Östersund.
Save on airfares by booking early! Flights to/from Östersund has a lot of business travelers and the fares are very popular among students attending the Mid Sweden University in Östersund.
Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, the largest airline in Scandinavia, offers flights to and from Åre/Östersund airport every day. SAS operates Stockholm Arlanda International (ARN) and offer Youth tickets to and from Östersund. SAS is a member of Star Alliance and has plenty of connection throughout Europe.
UPDATE 240211 – SAS has decided to launch an extra flight from Östersund to Stockholm/Arlanda on Sunday 28th april which we are very happy about.
BRA operates the smaller city airport Stockholm Bromma (BMA) which has cooperation with Finnair and Brussels airlines. There are several Destinations in Europe you can fly to non-stop from Bromma airport (BMA).
Trondheim/Vernaes (TRD)
There is also an international airport in Trondheim/Vernaes (TRD), Norway (230km from Östersund) with flights to the following cities: Alicante, Amsterdam, Antalya, Barcelona, Berlin/Schönefeld, Dubrovnik, Gdansk, Korfu, Krakow, København, London Gatwick, Malaga, Murcia, Nice, Reykjavik, Riga, Split, and Tallinn. TRD airport is operated by SAS and Norwegian and KLM. Transfer to Östersund from Trondheim airport can be made by rental car or by regional train. Local train from Værnes station to world famous Hell station, change to regional train bound for Östersund. Total travel time from TRD airport to Östersund is almost 4 hours, and only a couple of departures per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
By Train
SJ (the national train operator) has regular services between Östersund and many cities in Sweden. It is more time-consuming than flying, but if you wish to see the country, a good option indeed. Travel time from the capital Stockholm is ≈4 hours 50 minutes using the high-speed train which has a daily service in each direction (in the afternoon from Stockholm, in the morning from Östersund), whereas slower trains take around 8 hours.
